Feeder Birds Missing - I Know Why!!!
Coopers Hawk
... this particular Hawk of the Genus
Accipiter
, is a common backyard hawk since it favors small birds. It often marks it territory near backyard bird feeders where food can be plentiful. This particular picture was taken on 1/8/09 in my backyard.
It took me almost the entire year of 2008 to find this Hawk and finally on 10/31 I found one in my neighborhood while trick or treating with my family. It was chasing Mourning Doves from roof to roof! Since that day, more than one Coopers Hawk has made it clear that our backyard is part of their current territory. Although, I have not seen any songbirds fall victim just yet, I am certain that there has been some caught since the Hawks are sticking around. I am also certain these Hawks are the reason why on some days there is little to no bird activity at my feeders!
